Analysis of direction tuning of MSTd neurons during passive and active viewing. Direction index (DI) was calculated from responses to motion along each neuron's preferred axis, and preferred direction was allowed to be re-assigned between active and passive responses (Larger response - Smaller response) / (Larger response + Smaller response). Passive DI (abscissa) was plotted against active DI (ordinate) for 79 neurons. The majority of points are above the line of equality indicating that most neurons had larger DI values during active viewing. Across the population active DI was significantly larger than passive DI (p < 0.02 Student's t-test).
