Cover: Rhesus monkeys were trained to detect a simple musical melody. Recordings from auditory cortex in naïve and trained monkeys showed a marked difference in the pattern of responses to the notes of the learned melody. An alternating pattern of successive modulation waves of suppression (blue) and enhancement (red) for each note transition of the melody was observed in naive monkeys (left panel). In contrast, there was a striking “coincidence onset wave” of modulation in trained monkeys (right panel) leading to a very different neural representation of the melody. Cortical neurons in trained monkeys also encoded nonacoustic properties relevant to task performance and reward. For details see Yin P, Mishkin M, Sutter M, and Fritz JB. Early Stages of Melody Processing: Stimulus-Sequence and Task-Dependent Neuronal Activity in Monkey Auditory Cortical Fields A1 and R. J Neurophysiol 100: 3009–3029, 2008. First published October 8, 2008; doi:10.1152/jn.00828.2007.
