Cover: The specialization of the barn owl Tyto alba in hunting small prey in dimly lighted and acoustically noisy environments provides us with an attractive model for studying visual-auditory integration. Recordings from multisensory neurons in the optic tectum of the barn owl showed marked distinctions of the responses to bimodal stimuli. For example, the spikes in the bimodal responses were more concentrated around the average phase (dark rose plots) compared with unimodal responses (light rose plots). This gave rise to better phase locking to the bimodal stimulus even when the number of elicited spikes was not different from the number of spikes in the unimodal responses.
