Anatomy and physiology of a descending feedback pathway (stratum fibrosum) in the electrosensory lateral line lobe (ELL) of the weakly electric fish (Apteronotus leptorhynchus). A Lucifer yellow-filled basilar pyramidal cell (recorded in an ELL in vitro slice preparation) is superimposed on a transverse section of the ELL, illustrating the confined region of feedback pathway termination (labeled with WGA-HRP injected in the nucleus praeminentialis) on its apical spiny dendrites. Trace shows a typical response of a pyramidal cell to tetanic stimulation (100 Hz, 100 ms) of stratum fibrosum in vitro. Response is mediated by AMPA and NMDA receptors and consists of summating EPSPs that evoke spikes, followed by a slowly decaying depolarized tail that persists for hundreds of milliseconds. For details, see Figures 1 and 6 from N. J. Berman, J. Plant, R. W. Turner and L. Maler. Excitatory Amino Acid Receptors at a Feedback Pathway in the Electrosensory System: Implications for the Searchlight Hypothesis. J. Neurophysiol. 78: 1869-1881, 1997.
