Vertical section of a rat retina double immunostained for recoverin (green) and choline acetyltransferase (red). Recoverin is strongly expressed in the outer nuclear layer by photoreceptors and two types of bipolar cells are labeled in the inner nuclear layer. Axons of the two types of bipolar cells terminate at different levels within the inner plexiform layer. Choline acetyltransferase labeling is found in two types of amacrine cells, and their processes define two narrow horizontal bands in the inner plexiform layer. From T. Euler and H Wässle. Different Contributions of GABAA and GABAC Receptors to Rod and Cone Bipolar Cells in a Rat Retinal Slice Preparation. J. Neurophysiol. 79: 1384-1395, 1998.
