Cover: Simultaneous whole cell recording and [Ca2+]i imaging show that serotonin inhibits spike-evoked Ca2+ transients in sleep-related neurons from the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus. Spike-evoked Ca2+ transients are therefore expected to be largest during REM sleep, when serotonin levels are expected to be lowest. Each column illustrates a sequence of five pseudo-colored images acquired at 50-ms intervals starting from just before the onset (top frame) of each superimposed action potential. Data from five spikes fired at 2 Hz are illustrated on the back cover in the absence of serotonin and on the front cover in the presence of serotonin. Greater fluorescence intensity is indicated by a redder image. The winged visage of Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep (4th century BC, bronze), is peering through the data. From: Leonard CS, Rao SR, and Inoue T. Serotonergic inhibition of action potential evoked calcium transients in NOS-containing mesopontine cholinergic neurons. J Neurophysiol 84: 1558-1572, 2000.
