Cover: Normalized disparity tuning curves of MST neurons, sorted using the fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm of Bezdek and plotted in a compressed form. The individual tuning curves each occupy a narrow vertical strip with responses to zero disparity at the center (horizontal dashed line), responses to crossed disparities distributed above this line and responses to uncrossed disparities below. Response amplitude is color-coded such that high discharge rates are shown in red and low in blue. The curves are organized into four groups and rank ordered within each group according to their membership values (in an adjacent group) as revealed by the clustering algorithm. The superimposed yellow lines show the median tuning curves for each of the four groups in more traditional form, with high discharge rates shown as leftward excursions and low discharge rates as rightward excursions. From: Takemura A, Inoue Y, Kawano K, Quaia C, and Miles FA. Single-unit activity in cortical area MST associated with disparity-vergence eye movements: evidence for population coding. J Neurophysiol 85: 2245-2266, 2001.
