Cover: Boundary shape tuning of a macaque area V4 neuron. In each rectangular subplot, the x- (long) axis represents angular position of the boundary segment (running from 0° to 360°) and the y-axis represents boundary curvature (running from concave at bottom to convex at top). The tuning peak (red) within these subplots corresponds to sharp convex curvature at 80°---i.e., near the top of the object. Rows of subplots represent different values of clockwise-adjacent boundary curvature, with a peak in the broad concave range (bottom row). Columns (starting on back cover) represent different values of counter-clockwise-adjacent boundary curvature, with a peak in the broad convex range (middle columns). Thus, the 4-dimensional tuning peak corresponds to a horn-shaped boundary segment (a sharp convex point flanked by broad convexity on one side and broad concavity on the other) near the top of the object. For further details, see Pasupathy A and Connor CE. Shape representation in area V4: position-specific tuning for boundary conformation. J Neurophysiol 86: 2505-2519, 2001.
