Cover: Central pathways of warmth sensation in humans. Low-intensity laser stimuli directed to the dorsal skin overlying the vertebral spinous processes excite unmyelinated warmth receptors and evoke brain signals (left) generated in the cingulate gyrus and the insular region (top). The latency gain as the stimulation site gets closer to the brain is compatible with a low conduction velocity in the spinal pathway. From: Iannetti GD, Galeotti F, Romaniello A, Truini A, Rizzo C, Manfredi M, and Cruccu G. Evidence of a specific spinal pathway for the sense of warmth in humans. J. Neurophysiol. 10.1152/jn.00393.2002.
