Cover: Diagram of the coupling between neurons in the fastigial nucleus (FN) in the cerebellum and hindlimb motoneurons (MN) via commissural interneurons (CN). The coupling is trisynaptic, with additional relay neurons in the brain stem, but vestibulospinal (VS) neurons rather than reticulospinal (RS) neurons with axons in the medial longitudinal fascicle (MLF). Any actions via axons descending ipsilaterally (grey) were prevented by spinal hemisection. The records show that two descending volleys, following weak and strong stimulation of axons of FN neurons within the Hook bundle of Russell (HB), were evoked both before and after transection of axons of RS neurons in the MLF; the extent of the MLF lesion as indicated. Descending volleys evoked by stimuli applied rostral to the MLF lesion were then abolished (two top records, the grey trace showing where they should have appeared) while descending volleys from the lateral vestibular nucleus (VS) were preserved. Background: photomicrograph of the midline cerebellar region including the FN and the site of stimulation of HB. From: Matsuyama K and Jankowska E. Coupling between feline cerebellum (fastigial neurons) and motoneurons innervating hindlimb muscles. J Neurophysiol. 91: 1183–1192, 2004; 10.1152/jn.00896.2003.
