Cover: The goldfish (Carassius auratus) is widely used as a neurophysiological and behavioral model, especially for oculomotor function. Unlike terrestrial vertebrates, goldfish and two established developmental-genetic models, zebrafish and medaka, demonstrate excellent visuomotor performance soon after hatching and yet lack any angular vestibuloocular reflexes during the first few weeks of life. Nonetheless, all of these young fish are able to effectively orient, swim, hunt prey, and avoid predation. Photograph by J. C. Beck. From Beck JC, Gilland E, Tank DW, and Baker R. Quantifying the ontogeny of optokinetic and vestibuloocular behaviors in zebrafish, medaka, and goldfish. J. Neurophysiol (July 21, 2004). doi: 10.1152/jn00311.2004.
