Cover: The image shows a 2-D schematic of brain extracellular space with cellular elements and an injecting pipette. Two cases are depicted: injection of small molecules (red circles) and injection of large molecules (yellow circles). The smaller molecules travel a more direct path through the tissue extracellular space than the larger molecules, a consequence of the larger molecules being excluded from some narrower regions that the smaller molecules are not excluded from. Actual data (a diffusing cloud of fluorescently labled epidermal growth factor molecules imaged with a cooled CCD camera a short time after injection into primary somatosensory cortex, depicted in pseudocolor) is shown in the background of the extracellular space. From: Thorne RG, Hrabetová S, and Nicholson C. Diffusion of epidermal growth factor in rat brain extracellular space measured by integrative optical imaging. J. Neurophysiol (July 21, 2004). doi: 10.1152/jn00352.2004.
