Cover: The human facial musculature consists of a 3-dimensional assembly of multiple small muscle bundles and sheet-like muscle fiber arrays, performing a variety of complex and important orofacial functions such as speech and mediation of emotional and affective states. Knowledge on the topographical characteristics of these muscles has been limited and was mainly based on postmortem anatomical studies. We introduce a methodology for functional examination of the human facial muscle system at the level of single motor units and present information about muscle fiber architecture, motor unit territories, and location of motor unit endplate zones of the muscles of the lower face. From: Lapatki BG, Oostenveld R, Van Dijk JP, Jonas IE, Zwarts MJ, and Stegeman DF. Topographical characteristics of motor units of the lower facial musculature revealed by means of high-density surface EMG. J Neurophysiol. First published July 6, 2005; doi:10.1152/jn.00265.2005.
