Cover: Each image is a different visualization of a database of 1.7 million model neurons. Each pixel represents a single model neuron, and the color of that pixel represents the activity type of that model. The models differ in the maximal conductances of eight different types of voltage- and calcium-dependent channels. Each image is a single step in an optimization designed to reveal structure in the database. Top left image is the initial view, and the images get progressively more “orderly” as the optimization progresses. The final view (bottom right) reveals patterns in the mapping from maximal conductances to model activity that were not obvious a priori. For details, see Taylor AL, Hickey TJ, Prinz AA, and Marder E. Structure and visualization of high-dimensional conductance spaces. J Neurophysiol 96: 891–905, 2006. First published May 10, 2006; doi:10.1152/ jn.00367.2006.
