Cover: The comet goldfish, Carassius auratus, is an exceptional model for investigating the structure and function of neural circuits controlling vertebrate eye movements. The article by Straka et al. (this issue) illustrates that a single population of neurons in the hindbrain, called Area II, provides the predominant input to the vestibulocerebellum. The companion article by Beck et al. (September issue) demonstrates that activity of these neurons correlates with horizontal eye motion under all conditions. The incorporation of eye velocity signaling into a discrete, precerebellar nucleus provides an ideal opportunity for investigations of the modifiable neuronal sites that are responsible for oculomotor plasticity. Photo: J. C. Beck. For details, see Straka H, Beck JC, Pastor AM, and Baker R. Morphology and physiology of the cerebellar vestibulolateral lobe pathways linked to oculomotor function in the goldfish. J Neurophysiol 96: 1963–1980, 2006. First published June 14, 2006; doi:10.1152/jn.00334.2006. Also see Beck JC, Rothnie P, Straka H, Wearne SL, and Baker R. Precerebellar hindbrain neurons encoding eye velocity during vestibular and optokinetic behavior in the goldfish. J Neurophysiol 96: 1370–1382, 2006. First published June 14, 2006; doi:10.1152/jn.00335.2006.
