Cover: Cells in the primary motor cortex are known to encode information about the reaching direction of the arm. This information is succinctly summarized by a cell's preferred direction (PD), which specifies the direction of reach that maximizes the cell's activity. Because PDs are broadly distributed, M1 populations provide a robust code for reaching direction. A new statistical analysis reveals that, embedded within the broad distribution of PDs, there is a significant enrichment for forward- and backward-reaching directions. This enrichment can be seen in the pseudo-color density map on the surface of the sphere. Reaching directions are treated as points on the surface of the sphere, while the colormap indicates the density of PDs in the neighborhood of each reaching direction. Density varies from dark blue (lowest) to red (highest). The green arrow extending into the foreground is located at the peak of the density map and corresponds to a reach forward, away from the body. This enrichment may lend itself to hyperacuity for reaches in this direction. For details, see Naselaris T, Merchant H, Amirikian B, and Georgopoulos AP.
