Cover: The control of accurate fingertip forces is fundamental to dexterous manipulation, a hallmark of our species. Simultaneous recordings from all the muscles of a finger during static force production now provide evidence of a rich dynamical structure at a level close to the neural command. This direct physiological evidence on the muscle level supports a general view of motor control suggesting that the sensorimotor system preferentially controls task-relevant parameters while allowing task-irrelevant ones to fluctuate.
